SARMATIA - An engraved and hand-coloured map of Sarmatia, including (presently) Black and Caspian Sea, Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine, Russia and other regions by Christoph Cellarius, published in 1701.
This map was published in early edition of Cellarius' history atlas "Notitia Orbis Antiqui, Sive Geographia Plenior...", published in 1701 in London and Amsterdam.
Christoph Cellarius (Christopher Keller) (1638 - 1707) was a German scholar, historian and geographer, active in the later part of 17th century. He held academic position in both Weimar and Halle universities. Cellarius most important work was "A Universal History Divided Into an Ancient, Medieval, and New Period", where he introduced a concept of history division into ancient, medieval and modern, widely used today. His geographical atlas "Notitia Orbis Antiqui, Sive Geographia Plenior..." was one of the most popular atlases of ancient geography.
