Mesquite Bowl Blank M-1016 3.2" x 5.8" x 6.8" 3.9 lbs. This is a complex and gnarly block of Texas Mesquite that will turn a gorgeous bowl. The colors are the deep reddish brown of Mesquite heartwood, bright yellow sapwood, and dark brown bark. The bark forms an indentation in the surface of the block, giving it a natural edge on the back face. This slab blank was cut from the outer portion of a burly log and contains numerous clusters of burl buds within a beautifully complex grain pattern. The block is rough-sawn. We are providing photographs of all faces -- please scroll through to see all, as only 3 display by default. There are a number of pith-associated, age-darkened cracks throug this block. They are discontinuous, and the block is sound. They are partially opened and are candidates for filling with epoxy, if desired. Note - the pith-related, radial cracks in Mesquite are not drying features but are formed by severe dynamic stress on the tree during growth (think Texas hurricanes and tornados). They are unlikely to grow any larger once the lumber has been harvested and dried. This block has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. It has a lot of character that we've attempted to show in the photos. There may be additional surprises on the inside, such as bark inclusions. We recommend keeping CA glue handy while turning Mesquite. Mesquite is a joy and a challenge to turn. |

Easy install
Just installed in our bathroom. Feels solid. We have a potted plant on it now. You will want a drill bit extender to clear the shelf. I use the flexible type. Otherwise you won’t be able to get the screws in at a 90 degree angle.

Very nice, well made.
The nine-inch oak shelf is well made, and is 45 degrees. The wall where I planned to install it was not, and I suspect this is the problem some of the reviews saying the shelf was not made at 45 degrees. In my case, we removed wood a bit at a time until we achieved a good fit. We did receive all of the hardware, but beware. The plastic straight insert anchors do not snug up with the supplied screws. However we used the supplied plastic toggles with better results. The hardware is why I rate this 4 stars. Otherwise, it is a nice piece, and well worth the price.

Pieces missing, poor instructions, would not buy again!
Let's start with the good news: I did, eventually, get the shelves hung after a trip to the hardware store and some trial and error.
Now for the bad news:
* One of the screws holding the brace to the shelf was missing, making the shelf wobbly before I even hung it.
* The directions for hanging the shelves show a different anchor than the one that comes packaged with them. This anchor will ONLY work in sturdy drywall and it's going to leave a huge hole behind.
* The directions tell you to flip the shelf upside-down to position and mark the screw holes, BUT that means the sides of the shelf are reversed, and the hole positions do not match on each side. So if you start hammering or drilling based on those marks, they don't align and now you have extra holes in your wall.
Honestly, I regret buying these and wish I'd just chosen a free-standing shelf instead. But I made it work for me, so I guess there's that.
