Coryphantha Cornifera is a cylindrical shaped succulent that belongs to the Cactoideae family. Also known as Rhinoceros Cactus, the plant is native to Mexico and can grow up to a height of 6 inches. The plant goes dormant in winter.
Growth Rate
Even though it is a slow-growing cactus, it is fairly easy to cultivate. While it flowers very early, it does take about 8 to 12 years to reach its typical height.
Flowering
During the growing seasons which are spring, summer, and fall, you will see the blooming of yellow and occasionally, red-colored flowers.
Watering and Feeding
When potting, water slowly and wait for the water to flow out the bottom. Water once or twice a week in the growing season to ensure the soil is slightly wet at all times. Water once a week in winter. Feed once a week with a liquid fertilizer only during the growing seasons.
Soil
With a pH value of 6-7, create fertile and water-permeable soil. To make it fertile, add a small amount of organic potting and vermiculite.
Hardiness
Even though Rhinoceros Cactus loves a sunny situation it has a frost tolerance of -7°C. With a hardiness zone of 9a to 11b, it prefers to be grown outdoors than indoors.
Light
Coryphantha Cornifera love bright, direct light and should be given at least 6 to 8 hours of the same. Keep it away from blazing sunlight in the summer.
Propagation
While seeding is one of the methods of propagation, division and grafting is the most common ones. This is because they are faster and only require basic succulent knowledge.
As a precaution, you can spray water around the plant when you feel like the temperate is too high. Do not leave any water on the stem.
