Scattered around Spain’s Tarragona province, centred around Conca de Barberà, are the 15 plots of Costa D’Or Terroirs Mediterrani (Costador), headed up by winemaker Joan Franquet. A few years ago, Joan took over a plot of old vine Xarel-lo, most of which had been planted in 1954 but had been long abandoned and were producing on average just 100 grams of fruit per vine. With a couple years of loving care and organic cultivation (without any fertilisers or chemicals), these vines began producing 1kg of fruit per vine, just enough for Joan to begin vinification.

This wine is a product of its location – just 100m above sea level and 4 kms from the Mediterranean coast, on south-east-facing calcareous soil – resulting in a wine that is mineral and viscous, citrusy and buttery, with a deliciously moreish salty kick. If we can’t go to the Med, then let the Med come to us…
