J. K. [i.e.John KENDALL]. A Flight Into Egypt During the Winter of 1894-1895. [Moorlands, Sale. Whitsuntide 1895].
4to. Original pale green cloth, upper cover decorated and lettered in gilt, patterned endpapers, top edge gilt; pp. 135, numerous photographic and wood-engraved illustrations in the text; a very attractive copy, contemporary collector's stamp on front fly-leaf verso.
Very rare privately printed first edition. Dedication: "To My Dear Children and Grandchildren, This Short Sketch of a Bird's Eye View of the Land of the Pharaoh and the Fellah, As Seen During a Hurried Flight into Egypt, is with its Many Imperfections, Affectionately Dedicated. J.K." So begins this delightful work, comprising the memoirs of "The Scribbler", on his trip accompanied by "The Soprano", "The Contralto" and "The Bachelor" - we never discover their names, though we are given their (particularly fine) portrait photographs - as they head by land and sea towards Egypt, via Naples and Gibraltar, where they join the Rameses III, "the latest addition to Messrs. Cook's Nile flotilla," enabling them to travel to Memphis, Serapeum, and the Tomb of Ti (even exploring the interior, described in detail), with diversions involving whirling dervishes, dancing girls, and other entertainments offered by Shepherd's Hotel. The photographs are particularly evocative, and show an Egypt now lost or spoiled by the tourist invasion.
