The Dioscorea hemicrypta is a fascinating and rare caudiciform plant known for its woody, swollen base that resembles an elephant’s foot. With its distinctive, cracked caudex and delicate climbing vines, Dioscorea hemicrypta is a conversation starter in any succulent or caudiciform collection. When young, the caudex is brown and smooth, but it cracks and fissures over time.

Native to parts of southern Africa, the drought-tolerant Dioscorea hemicrypta thrives in arid and semi-arid regions.

It develops a hard, textured caudex, which serves as a water reservoir, allowing it to endure long periods of drought.

As the plant matures, it produces 14 feet long twining, vining stems with heart-shaped leaves that emerge during the growing season.

The basal stem, or caudex, can grow up to 20 inches wide.

When cultivated in containers, it remains manageable, making it an excellent choice for bonsai-style displays or decorative pots.

When they mature, the flowers of Dioscorea hemicrypta appear in late spring. These small, inconspicuous greenish flowers are not particularly showy but contribute to the plant’s natural cycle. Due to its dormancy cycle, the vines may die back seasonally, with the caudex remaining dormant until conditions improve.

When it comes to care, the Dioscorea prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun. If grown indoors, place it near a sunny window with filtered light. It thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F. Protect from cold drafts and keep it in a warm, dry environment.

For outdoor cultivation, it thrives in light shade to full sun, though excessive direct sunlight can scorch young leaves.

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 9-11.

Use a well-drained succulent soil, opens in a new tabGo to Soil cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media to prevent root rot. Dioscorea hemicrypta goes dormant in the summer, when watering should be reduced.

The plant will re-grow in the winter when new growth appears from the caudex. Watering should resume when new growth appears.

A diluted, NPK fertilizer can be applied once a year during the growing season to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing during dormancy.

The Dioscorea hemicrypta can be propagated easily through division of tubers or by planting seeds. Division of tubers is the most common method used for propagation, as it allows for faster growth and establishment of new plants.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Dioscorea hemicrypta is a truly unique plant, perfect for collectors who appreciate unusual, drought-tolerant species. Its sculptural caudex, vining growth, and seasonal dormancy make it an interesting addition to succulent and caudiciform collections. Whether grown as a bonsai specimen, container plant, or part of a xeriscape garden, this plant thrives with minimal care, making it a rewarding choice for enthusiasts.

Not the same rubber.
I just received these today. I already have two of the same size direct from the local pet store. The one thing I liked about them that made me want to buy more - my 13lb dog could chew on them all night and never leave a mark. The red one I received was as expected. The blue one I received was not made out of the same rubber. It was softer. We played catch a few times and it didn’t bounce the same. I looked away for 5 minutes and she had it already starting to shred. Not sure what happened but 1 of the 2 balls I was sent was not up to par, possibly defective.

Very cute, good quality
Style: Lambchop, Size: 10", Style: Lambchop, Size: 10"
Our Two year-old Great Pyrenees rescue loves her Lambchop. She’s fairly gentle with it, but it did accidentally rip so we had replace it since she loves it so much. No fault of the product. The product is very well made, She just got a little rough with it.

We <3 big lambchops
Style: White, Size: 24" Jumbo, Style: White, Size: 24" Jumbo
These are my vizsla's absolute FAVORITE toy. I mean, she doesn't leave the room without bringing at least one. We've bought several of these exact toys now and they're surprisingly durable- we've even put a few through the laundry. She loves to snuggle, nibble, and carry this toy like a security blanket. These are the big ones, so they get a little discolored from her grabbing them around the belly. The squeakers are pretty few and far between so it's generally not noisy unless she's super bored or excited. Get it, your dog will love it and they're cheaper than some of the small ones.

A Classic Toy My Dog Can’t Get Enough Of!
Style: Blue Birthday Hat, Size: 10.5"
The Multipet Lamb Chop Dog Plush Toy (10.5”, Cream) is an absolute winner in our house! This adorable, nostalgic plush is just as cute as it is entertaining, and my dog fell in love with it the moment it came out of the package. Super Soft & Cuddly The material is extra plush and velvety, making it perfect for dogs who love to snuggle. It feels well-made and not scratchy like some cheaper toys. Squeakers That Keep Dogs Engaged There are multiple squeakers inside, and they’re loud enough to keep your dog excited but not obnoxious. My pup carries it around proudly and squeaks it nonstop. Great Size The 10.5” size is ideal for both small and medium to large dogs. Big enough to cuddle, small enough to toss around easily. Durable for a Plush Toy While it’s not built for heavy destroyers (no plush toy truly is), it holds up surprisingly well to daily play and lots of shaking. Overall: The Multipet Lamb Chop is a fantastic combo of cuddly plush and squeaky fun. Perfect for fetch, snuggles, or as your dog’s new favorite companion. If your dog enjoys plush toys, this is definitely one to grab. Highly recommended! 🐑🐶💛
