Following the rediscovery of a catalogue from 1912, Schmincke has reintroduced the historical Cochineal Red pigment to their watercolour range for an exclusive limited edition run.
Cochineal pigment is derived from a beetle of the same name native to South and Central America, and has been used as a colourant for millennia. Known as Nocheztli to the Aztecs, this gorgeous carmine red immediately entranced Europeans, with Pope Paul II officially declaring it the dye for cardinals' robes, and the British Military adopting it in their now-famous red coats.
Despite its longevity as a dye, artists should be wary of light exposure when using Cochineal pigments: overexposure, particularly to sunlight, has been known to dull these vibrant colours to a brownish dried blood tone.
