"De Gelegentheyt van t'Paradys...", a map of the Holy Land or the Earthly Paradise - a striking hand-coloured print from Dutch Bible, engraved by Daniel Stoopendaal and published in Amsterdam in 1738 by Hendrick Jacob, Pieter Keur and Pieter Rotterdam.
A highly decorative map from antique Dutch State Bible covering an area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf, and embellished by vignettes of scenes from Genesis. The path of Jacob from Canaan to Babylon is shown in double lines. The Babylon Tower is standing in the city of Babel. On the left, Johan is in the whale, next a sailing ship near Cyprus. Bottom centre vignette depicts scene with Noah's Ark at the beginning of the Great Flood. Other vignettes show scenes from the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve in Paradise.
Daniel Stoopendaal (1672 - 1726) was a Dutch engraver, same as his father Bastiaan Stoopendaal before him. He was active in Amsterdam between 1685 and 1713 and made engravings of architecture and maps, including maps for the Bible: "Biblia, dat is De gantsche H. Schrifture, vervattende alle de canonijcke boecken des Ouden en des Nieuwen Testaments", published by Hendrick Jacob and Pieter Keur and Pieter Rotterdam.
