De jonge lichtgroene naalden steken in de zomer af tegen de donkergroene, oude naalden van het jaar er voor. Cryptomeria japonica houdt van een licht beschaduwde standplaats. Hij groeit goed op een normale, voedselrijke en goed doorlaten bodem. De jonge planten zijn tijdens strenge winters vorstgevoelig. Naarmate ze ouder worden zijn ze goed winterhard en verdragen ze een temperatuur van -25 °C. Deze plant is geschikt om te gebruiken in lanen, hagen en als solitair.
