Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition is een monumentale multi-vintage Champagne gebouwd rond de oogst van 2017, met extra diepte door reservewijnen uit meerdere jaren. In de neus komen citrusolie, rijpe peer en gele appel naar voren, gevolgd door brioche, amandel, subtiele kruiden en een duidelijke, krijtachtige mineraliteit. In de mond is de wijn breed en satijnachtig, met een zeer fijne mousse, een compacte kern van fruit en een opvallend zilt-minerale spanning die de lengte draagt. De afdronk is lang, gelaagd en sereen, met aanhoudende notigheid, citruszeste en “chalky” precisie.

Vinificatie.
Deze Édition is een assemblage van 150 wijnen uit 13 verschillende jaren (jongste 2017, oudste 2001), met een substantieel aandeel reservewijnen om complexiteit en diepte te brengen. De basiswijnen worden perceel per perceel gevinifieerd, met een deel dat traditioneel op kleine eiken vaten wordt opgevoed om textuur en structuur te bouwen zonder de frisheid te verliezen. De tweede gisting gebeurt op fles volgens de traditionele methode. Daarna volgt een lange rijping op de lies (meer dan 6 jaar), waardoor de mousse verfijnt en de typische Krug-lagen van brioche, notigheid en kruidige complexiteit zich volledig kunnen ontwikkelen.

Het domein.
Maison Krug (opgericht in 1843) behoort tot de absolute top van Champagne en staat bekend om een unieke, compromisloze benadering: maximale selectie, enorme bibliotheek aan reservewijnen en een stijl die altijd “vineus” en gastronomisch is, met meer nadruk op structuur en complexiteit dan op puur fruit. De huisstijl is gebouwd op precisie en geduld: langzame rijping, minimale concessies en een constante focus op harmonie en lengte.

Sinds 2024 zijn hun eigen wijngaarden (ongeveer 20% van de productie) biologisch gecertificeerd en ondersteunen ze hun partners om tegen 2030 ook dit certificaat te halen.
