Hoofdpersoon was een scheepsarts die na een schipbreuk met een reisgezel terechtkwam in een aards paradijs. Zij leerden er alles over de gewoonten van de bevolking. Toen zij op hun beurt uitleg gaven over het christendom, merkten ze dat dit volkomen absurd werd bevonden. Ook andere ontmoetingen tijdens hun verdere omzwervingen, onder andere met een dominicaan en met een tot de islam bekeerde Gascogner, boden stof tot filosofische en maatschappijkritische bespiegelingen. Het boek beleefde herdruk na herdruk en was een inspiratiebron voor Jules Verne. Volgens Jonathan Israel overvleugelt het alle filosofische romans van zijn tijd.
