De Japanse treursierkers (Prunus serrulata 'Kiku-shidare') bloeit in de maanden april en mei met zachtroze bloemen die in trossen van vijf bij elkaar staan. De bloemen hebben een opvallende chrysantachtige vorm. De 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' produceert zelden vruchten. Deze Japanse sierkers heeft een treurvormige groeiwijze, waarbij de takken elegant naar beneden hangen. In jonge jaren heeft de boom vooral een horizontale vertakking, maar naarmate hij ouder wordt, gaan de takken meer hangen. Het blad is donkergroen van kleur en ovaal van vorm. De 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' gedijt het beste op een zonnige locatie met een goed doorlatende, vruchtbare bodem. De 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' vereist weinig snoei. Als snoei gewenst is, wordt aangeraden dit te doen na de bloei in juni of juli op een niet al te hete, bewolkte dag.
