Purple Italian Garlic is a standout hardneck variety admired for its striking deep purple-striped bulbs and balanced, complex flavor. Each bulb reveals 8–12 large, easy-to-peel cloves wrapped in russet-toned skins, perfect for chefs and gardeners alike. The flavor starts mild and grassy, building into a sweet heat that lingers briefly—making it ideal for raw salsas, dressings, and multi-ingredient Mediterranean dishes.

This variety performs well in both temperate and cooler climates and prefers a fall planting for best results, maturing by midsummer. Purple Italian Garlic is known for its adaptability, dependable yields, and culinary versatility. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from consistent moisture during its growth cycle. While not recommended for roasting, its fresh, clean flavor makes it a favorite in kitchens looking for nuanced garlic without overpowering intensity.

Whether you’re a home gardener or gourmet cook, Purple Italian Garlic delivers on both flavor and visual appeal. Its bold appearance, easy clove structure, and mild heat make it a go-to heirloom garlic for gardeners who value performance and taste. Expect eye-catching bulbs and a flavorful harvest from this classic Mediterranean variety.

Flavor and Aroma Profile

  • Flavor Profile: Purple Italian Garlic offers a delicate yet robust flavor with grassy notes, medium sweetness, and a gentle heat that builds slowly before fading. It enhances raw and lightly cooked dishes, especially in Mediterranean cuisine, with a smooth balance of flavor and subtle spice.

  • Aroma Profile: When peeled or chopped, this garlic releases a mild yet earthy scent, with sweet and savory notes that enrich the kitchen without overwhelming. Its aromatic presence adds depth to salsas, dressings, and sautéed dishes, making it a versatile and fragrant culinary choice.

Planting Time

It is typically planted in the fall for a summer harvest, similar to other hardneck garlic varieties. Planting in the fall allows the cloves to establish roots before winter sets in, leading to healthier plants and larger bulbs.

Scaping

Hardneck garlic varieties like this garlic produce scapes, curly flower stalks that emerge from the center of the plant. While the scapes are edible and delicious, their removal redirects energy to bulb development, resulting in larger cloves. Harvest scapes when they curl once or twice and use them in culinary dishes like pesto or stir-fries.

Storage and Preservation

How to Store Fresh Garlic

Once harvested in early to midsummer, allow the green stalks to completely dry and turn brown to ensure the garlic is fully cured. For best results, hang the hardneck bulbs in a cool, dry, and airy location to promote proper curing and preserve their bold flavor and nutrients. This type of garlic keeps well for several months, making it an excellent choice for both fresh and sautéed dishes.

Preserving Garlic for Long-Term Use

To extend the shelf life of this garlic, harvest when the foliage has fully browned and the bulbs have reached maturity. Cure them in a dry, breezy location to retain their aromatic flavor and beneficial compounds. With its smooth texture and grassy-sweet flavor, this garlic variety enhances everything from vinaigrettes to sautéed greens while maintaining quality in long-term storage.

Best Practices for Drying and Freezing

Freezing garlic after it has been properly cured is an effective way to extend its shelf life while maintaining its rich flavor and quality. Depending on your future use, you can freeze it in several forms—whole bulbs, individual cloves (peeled or with skins), or even minced. Although it’s possible to freeze garlic right after harvest without curing, it’s usually not advised. High moisture levels in uncured garlic can cause a soft or mushy texture once thawed, and the flavor may not be as robust.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5

A good read
Format: Kindle
Multiple points of view. 3 Alpha men and an Omega male. She is a Beta in training for a new program placing betas in Alpha/Omega packs. Mila is only doing the program for the money to take care of her dad. She wasn't expecting to fall for a pack but when she sees this packs Omega she is done for. There is just something about him. His Alphas are good looking as well. Too bad she is hiding a secret and their government is acting shady. I liked it and can't wait to see where their story goes.

Slightly repetitive but I did love some things
Format: Kindle
I love this type of story. And omegaverse is one of my all time favorite genres. But there are a few things that pulled me out of my enjoyment while I was reading. It was repetitive at times as well as struggled with telling not showing. So we didn’t always feel like we were experiencing things with the main character. There were also some plot holes but they may still be answered in part 2. Now this isn’t to be said I didn’t enjoy parts of the story. I loved the almost instant love between Mila and Oliver. And how he started changing around her.
