Feather meal, often regarded as a lesser-known organic fertilizer, holds incredible potential for enhancing soil health and promoting robust plant growth. Among the various organic fertilizers available, feather meal stands out due to its unique composition and benefits.

What is Feather Meal?

Feather meal is a natural byproduct of the poultry industry. It is made from the dried and ground feathers of chickens, turkeys, or other poultry birds. These feathers are rich in keratin, a protein that makes up feathers, hair, and nails in animals. When processed into feather meal, this organic material becomes a potent source of nutrients for plants.

Nutrient-Rich Composition

Feather meal is valued for its nutrient-rich composition, which includes essential elements that support plant growth. Here are some key nutrients found in feather meal:

  1. Nitrogen (N): Feather meal is particularly high in nitrogen content. Nitrogen is crucial for promoting leafy, green growth in plants. It aids in the development of healthy foliage, which is essential for photosynthesis and overall plant vitality.

  2. Slow-Release Nitrogen: One of the standout features of feather meal is its slow-release nature. Unlike some synthetic fertilizers that provide a quick burst of nitrogen, feather meal releases its nutrients gradually over time. This slow-release characteristic ensures that plants receive a steady and consistent supply of nitrogen, reducing the risk of over-fertilization and nutrient runoff.

  3. Protein: Feather meal's high protein content makes it a valuable source of nitrogen in organic farming. As it breaks down in the soil, the proteins release nitrogen in a form that is readily available to plants.

Benefits of Feather Meal

  1. Improved Soil Fertility: Feather meal enriches the soil with nitrogen, promoting healthier and more vigorous plant growth. It can be particularly beneficial for nitrogen-hungry crops like leafy greens, corn, and tomatoes.

  2. Long-Lasting Nutrient Supply: Due to its slow-release nature, feather meal provides a consistent supply of nitrogen to plants over an extended period. This can reduce the need for frequent reapplication of fertilizers, making it a cost-effective choice for gardeners and farmers.

  3. Reduced Environmental Impact: Feather meal is an eco-friendly choice because it minimizes the risk of nitrogen leaching into groundwater or causing nutrient runoff into nearby water bodies. This helps protect the environment and prevent water pollution.

Using Feather Meal

Feather meal is versatile and can be used in various ways:

  • Garden Beds: When planting vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants, incorporate feather meal into the soil before planting to provide a steady source of nitrogen throughout the growing season.

  • Container Gardening: Feather meal can also be used in container gardening. Mix it into the potting mix or apply it as a topdressing to provide essential nutrients to potted plants.

  • Lawn Care: Feather meal can be applied to lawns to promote healthy grass growth. It encourages lush green lawns without the rapid growth spurts associated with synthetic fertilizers.

Feather meal is a valuable organic fertilizer that offers a slow-release, nutrient-rich solution for enhancing soil fertility and promoting robust plant growth. Whether you are a home gardener or a professional farmer, incorporating feather meal into your gardening practices can lead to healthier plants, reduced environmental impact, and ultimately, more bountiful harvests.

Wow! So moisturizing!
OMGosh, this feels so good on your lips! I just got this today so I’ll have to update if the moisture doesn’t last. But so far it feels nice. I did have a slight issue with it melting onto itself in the one day it took to get to me. See photos. The tube itself was slightly concave because of the melting. But is still intact. So far though I love this stuff!

Pretty good stuff
Not a miracle cream, but I've certainly paid more for worse lip balm. The tallow is helping keep my lips hydrated, and it feels great when applied. Just got Invisalign, and I struggle with hydration normally, but this is helping keep the lips soft and smooth, and is miles ahead of the cheap drugstore brands that dry more than they help.

Worth a try, I guess.
Picked up this beef tallow lip balm for my husband. We had the worst winter and everything was so dry. He is used to using the waxy sticks you buy at the big box stores to treat his dry lips. He has been using tallow and I noticed this lip balm and thought he might like it. The stick is quite big. Thicker than the normal waxy stick you might buy at the store. In line with some of the larger sticks I have seen in the stores by some of the men's lines that are out there. He used it often and found it to work well. Did it work better than some of the waxy sticks from the store, he didn't think so but it was on par with those. He does like that it is natural. He told me that he would apply it and his lips would feel good and it would last for a while and just like any other product he would try, his lips would be dry again after a while. I would say that generally, it sounds like an average product but it's natural. Worth a try, I guess!
