Description

Named after its similarity to the familiar dwarf cichlid, this is a very different fish and comes from the sandy litoral zone of Lake Victoria, where rocks offer shelter. Like all of the endemic cichlids from this lake, wild populations were almost driven to extinction by the introduction of the highly predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus) and aquarium populations are important to their continued survival.

Care

The aquarium should be spacious and aquascaped with rocky outcrops which break the sightline and enable territorial fishes to avoid one another. These structures should be built with the purpose of creating many crevices for the fish to explore but constructed in such a way so as to keep the rocks stable if the fish start to dig around and underneath them. Filtration should be efficient, with moderate water flow and a good level of oxygenation. Regular partial water changes will help keep nitrate to a minimum. Victorian cichlids are not overly aggressive and should be kept in groups, ideally with 2 or more females to every male. Suitable tankmates could include some of the more easy going mbuna or peacocks from Lake Malawi, but do research individual species thoroughly to ensure compatibility.

Having been known as Paralabidochromis sp. 'Rock Kribensis' before being described as sauvagei, it seems that this fish finds itself back in Haplochromis until the taxonomic situation is resolved.

Feeding

A good quality flake or granular food should be supplemented with a variety of frozen foods such as bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, daphnia, vitamin-enriched brineshrimp, and Mysis shrimp. Live foods are eagerly accepted.

Breeding

This species is easily bred in the home aquarium. When ready to spawn, the colouration of the male will intensify and his aggression level will heighten. He will choose and clean a spawning site, then display to the female fish until one accepts him. He can be rather aggressive in pursuit of a female, so spawning should always be attempted in a harem situation where the male is outnumbered by females and aggression is dispersed amongst the group. When a female is receptive, the pair will circle each other in a head to tail manner a number of times, until the female deposits her eggs. These are deposited just one or two at a time and after doing so, she immediately turns around and picks them up. At the same time, the male will rotate so that he is almost on his side, at the same time shaking and extending his anal fin, releasing his milt. The female sees the egg spots on the male's anal fin and attempts to pick up those dummy eggs whilst she is picking up the real ones that she deposited, and at the same time taking in milt. This is the method of fertilisation, and this ritual may go on for some time until the female is spent of eggs. She will incubate the eggs in her mouth for up to 3 weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, which can immediately be offered baby brineshrimp (Artemia nauplii) and crushed flake food.

Great Kitchen Purchase
Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size, Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size
I didn’t realize how much I needed a kitchen scale until I got this. It’s really accurate and makes cooking (especially baking) so much easier and more consistent. The tare function is a game changer—you can zero out the bowl and keep adding ingredients without extra measuring cups. It’s also easy to switch between grams and ounces, which is great for following different recipes. Most digital scales measure very precisely, often down to about 1 gram, which makes a big difference for accuracy. It’s compact, easy to clean, and doesn’t take up much space on the counter. Overall, such a simple tool but makes a big difference—definitely worth having in any kitchen.

Great little scale!
Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size
Love this little guy! It's small I use it for all my meals. When in a rush I can just toss it in my lunch box and use it at work. Super convenient. It sits on my counter no bigger than a side plate. Worth the money!

Food scale
Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size, Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size
This product is worth the price. The only thing is that it kind of doesn’t work sometimes when you are trying to switch the unit and you might have to double click (as shown in my video) other than that the product works perfect for measuring my food and even my liquids. It’s the perfect size not too big and bulky but it also isn’t that small. As you can see in my picture it’s small enough to fit in my drawer (I don’t like to leave it on my counter) it’s a tiny bit bigger than an Alexa.i also like that the price isn’t to high . I would definitely recommend this product! It’s a sturdy product it doesn’t move when you’re putting any items on it. It’s easy to clean off as well. Another thing is it takes batteries ( it takes AAA batteries, just 2 of them) and I liked how it came with batteries inside of them already .

Lightweight, accurate, and perfect for everyday use
Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size
This kitchen scale is a great tool for anyone doing meal prep, baking, or tracking food. It’s lightweight and compact, so it doesn’t take up much space and is easy to store when not in use. Accuracy is spot on—it measures consistently in grams and ounces, which is perfect for portion control and precise recipes. The tare function works smoothly, making it easy to weigh multiple ingredients in one container. The stainless steel surface is a nice touch—it looks clean and is easy to wipe down after use. The display is clear and easy to read, even in lower light. For the price, it’s hard to beat. It does exactly what you need without any unnecessary extras. Pros: -Lightweight and compact -Accurate and consistent measurements -Easy-to-use tare function -Stainless steel surface (easy to clean) -Great value Cons: -Small size may not fit very large bowls -Basic features (no advanced tracking) Overall: A reliable, no-frills kitchen scale that gets the job done. Perfect for meal prep, dieting, and everyday cooking.
