The AP Limited Editions Urushi Lacquer Art Fountain Pen - Gabion is a remarkable study in texture, structure, and the transformative possibilities of traditional Japanese lacquer art. While many urushi pens rely on pictorial scenes, figurative motifs, or elaborate maki-e imagery, the Gabion takes a profoundly different approach. It finds beauty not in illustration, but in pattern, depth, and the tactile qualities of the lacquer itself. The result is a writing instrument that feels both contemporary and timeless—a quiet work of art that invites contemplation through its intricate surface and extraordinary craftsmanship.

Produced in an extremely limited edition and individually handcrafted, every Gabion pen possesses subtle variations in texture and finish, ensuring that no two examples are precisely alike. Like all exceptional urushi creations, the Gabion rewards both visual admiration and physical interaction, revealing new dimensions of light and detail with every encounter.

Craftsmanship & Design

At first glance, the Gabion immediately captivates with its richly textured surface. The pen's body is enveloped in a mesmerizing lattice of intersecting geometric lines that appear to float above layers of translucent urushi lacquer. Between these lines lies a field of shimmering particulate inclusions that sparkle like mineral fragments suspended within dark amber glass.

The visual effect is extraordinary. Depending on the angle of light, the pen shifts between shades of deep bronze, smoky plum, and warm chestnut, while flashes of iridescence emerge from beneath the lacquer. The finish feels almost geological in nature, evoking precious minerals embedded within layers of stone or light glinting through crystalline formations.

Unlike decorative techniques that simply sit atop the surface, the Gabion's complexity appears to reside within the lacquer itself. The intersecting lines create a sense of dimensionality and movement, while the sparkling inclusions provide depth that seems to extend beneath the pen's surface. The result is simultaneously architectural and organic—precise in its geometry yet beautifully unpredictable in its interaction with light.

Such effects are only possible through the extraordinary properties of urushi lacquer. Derived from the sap of the lacquer tree and painstakingly applied in successive layers, urushi possesses a depth and luminosity that modern synthetic finishes simply cannot replicate. Each layer must cure slowly in a carefully controlled environment before additional layers can be applied and polished. The process requires patience, precision, and a profound understanding of one of Japan's oldest artistic traditions.

The Story Behind the Artwork

The name "Gabion" refers to an architectural structure consisting of wire frameworks filled with stones. Used for centuries in engineering and landscape design, gabions possess a unique beauty born from the relationship between geometry and nature. Ordered frameworks contain irregular organic materials, creating harmony between structure and spontaneity.

The Gabion fountain pen interprets this concept through lacquer art. The intersecting geometric lines evoke the framework of a gabion structure, while the shimmering particulate elements suggest the stones contained within it. Rather than depicting a literal architectural object, the pen captures the essence of the idea itself—the balance between order and randomness, precision and nature, permanence and change.

The effect is deeply contemplative. The rigid lattice provides visual stability, while the sparkling inclusions create movement and unpredictability. Every angle reveals a different relationship between these elements, much like light interacting with mineral formations or sunlight passing across a stone-filled architectural installation.

This conceptual approach distinguishes the Gabion from most decorative writing instruments. The artwork does not tell a narrative in the traditional sense; instead, it invites the viewer to appreciate texture, material, and structure as art in their own right. The pen becomes a meditation on form and balance, demonstrating that inspiration can emerge from unexpected sources and be elevated through exceptional craftsmanship.

Writing Experience

Beneath its artistic exterior lies a fountain pen intended to be used and enjoyed. The generous proportions provide a comfortable and reassuring presence in hand, while the carefully balanced construction makes the pen exceptionally well suited to extended writing sessions.

The pen is fitted with a 14-karat gold nib that delivers a smooth and expressive writing experience. Responsive yet controlled, the nib provides excellent ink flow and a refined writing character suitable for everything from correspondence and journaling to reflective personal writing.

The cartridge/converter filling system offers the convenience and flexibility expected from a modern luxury writing instrument while preserving the pen's elegant proportions and ease of maintenance. Like many of the finest examples of Japanese lacquer art, the Gabion succeeds equally as a collector's piece and as an instrument intended for regular use.

Collector Significance

Within the world of contemporary urushi fountain pens, the Gabion occupies a particularly fascinating position. Many lacquer pens celebrate mythology, landscapes, flora, or wildlife. The Gabion instead explores abstraction, texture, and architectural inspiration. Its appeal lies not in figurative imagery but in its extraordinary ability to transform geometry and material into something emotionally resonant.

AP Limited Editions has built its reputation by pushing the boundaries of traditional lacquer techniques while remaining deeply respectful of their heritage. The Gabion exemplifies this philosophy beautifully. It demonstrates that urushi lacquer remains a living art form capable of expressing both ancient craftsmanship and modern design sensibilities.

For collectors of Japanese lacquer art, unusual textures, and highly conceptual writing instruments, the Gabion represents a compelling reminder that some of the most memorable pens are not those that depict a story, but those that invite us to discover one for ourselves.

This will work but prep is key!
I have an older RV that the gelcoat has dulled and is oxidized, but otherwise in good shape. I have buffed and polished in the past only for it to last a short time. I was looking up different products to try and this one has such good reviews, I thought I would give it a try. I bought the kit with the Poliglow and the Poliprep, with the scrubber and the microfiber glove. I started with the poliprep and it did a great job of gettting the streaks and black marks off. You spend a lot of time scrubbing to your likeness because anything that is still on the gelcoat when you apply the poliglow, it will be locked in there. The Poliglow is like a clearcoat that goes over the gelcoat. You have to build up layers and here are some of the tips and tricks I figured out that really helped my finished RV look great. First, make sure the applicator stays damp, this keeps the poliglow more uniform across the glove. Also, stick it in a zip lock bag when not using, you do not want it to dry out while you are using it. I found out that applying this in direct sunlight in warm temps, is the best method. This allows the poliglow to dry really fast. The first 3 or 4 layers will look streaky and dull but this is ok and as you build up the layers, the shine will come back. I found if you do this when its cooler, the layers do not dry as quick and you will get some permanent streaking or running. I had to remove a section I did in the evening because I noticed this. When in direct sunlight, this gave me the best results with no streaking or running. It dries fast and you can keep working. Like it says, do not do big sections at a time, keep it to small what you can reach sections and build those up and move on. As far as how much to buy? I have a 40 ft toy hauler and I got to kits and I had just enough to finish the whole thing minus the nose cap. I have Durabak on the nose cap, so I dont need to worry about that. I ended up buying one more bottle of the poliglow to have for my maintenance coats. Overall, I am pleased with how my 10 year old RV looks and other than some of the decals show age, it looks new again. If I were to buy a new RV, I would put this on right away and preserve the whole RV including the decals. Its not too expensive and its a lot of work, especially the prep, but it does end up with great results.

Excellent shine
Excellent line of products. Looking at the picture, you can see what the camper looked like before the Poli Glow. To the left of the window is the after Poli Glow. It takes some elbow grease (follow instructions well) but well worth it.

Camping enthusiast approved
One bottle covered my 20ft camping trailer 4 coats and with a little remaining for future touch ups. It definitely increases the gloss. I'm glad I didn't waste my time with wax. This is like an easy wipe on clear coat. I will report back in the future for longevity.

poli glow shine
its works great .when applying more coats the shinier it gets i used on several old boats because the florida sun bakes the jell coat right off and no wax made can withstand salty seas , so why not ,, when you apply use the mit and don't gob it on .. nice and easy and recoat in five minutes when you get to about five coats you will be amazed.looks like new .. just a tip also after about a year or so and you want to re apply,, go to your local hardware store and get a gallon of high strength or non diluted floor stripper and put in spray bottle and use to remove old poli-glow also great for cleaning stubborn stains [ i use full strength ] just spray on and brush with a scrub brush and rinse ..and let dry and re apply ,, its also works on car faded bumpers ,, also never use harsh cleaners it will cause streaking the best thing i have found for cleaning the boat after poli glow was put on is car wash from auto store with wax or not it seems not to hurt the shine . it reminds me of mop an glow,,.
