У Західній Церкві константинопольського патріярха Фотія тисячу років ганьбили як архиєретика й архисхизматика. Тим часом на Сході його шанували як святого, вченого, зразкового церковного мужа. Франтішек Дворник, наново дослідивши історію Фотієвого патріяршества, повторно зважує всі аргументи, відокремлює факти від домислів, ще раз перевіряє всі свідчення й доходить висновку, що у випадку з Фотієм західні єрархи, каноністи й історики помилялися – Фотій і справді був видатним церковним діячем. У другій частині своєї праці Дворник з’ясовує причини тої несправедливости, жертвою якої став патріярх Фотій.
