Alice Coachman (November 9, 1923 – July 14, 2014), a track and field star, made history at the 1948 Olympic Games in London becoming the first black woman to win an Olympic medal.

Coachman was born and raised in the heart of the segregated south in Albany, Georgia where she was often denied the opportunity to train and compete in organized sports. Instead, she trained on her own, running barefoot in the fields and on dirt roads using old equipment to create hurdles to improve her high jump. After demonstrating her skills on the track at Madison High School, Tuskegee Institute offered 16-year-old Coachman a scholarship to attend its high school in 1939. She competed on and against all-black teams throughout the segregated south.

Over the next several years, Coachman dominated Amateur Athlete Union (AAU) competitions. By 1946, the same year she enrolled at Albany State College, she amassed ten consecutive national titles in the high jump. Coachman also won the 50-meter outdoor title every year from 1943 to 1947 and held a total of 25 national titles.

While at peak athletic form, World War II forced the cancellation of the Olympic Games in both 1940 and 1944.

In 1948, Coachman was finally able to show the world her talent in London as a member of the Olympic team. She leapt to a record-breaking height of 5 feet, 6 1/8 inches in the high jump to become the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal.

Following the Olympic Games, Coachman returned to a segregated south. At an event in her honor, blacks and whites were seated separately. The mayor sat on the stage with her, but would not shake her hand.

Coachman was a pioneer and paved the way for female African-American Olympic track stars like Wilma Rudolph, Florence Griffith Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. “If I had gone to the Games and failed, there wouldn’t be anyone to follow in my footsteps,” she said. “It encouraged the rest of the women to work harder and fight harder.”

Alice Coachman died at the age of 90.

Life-saver for hands in pain
Size: 5.1 Ounce (Pack of 2)
This is my favorite hand cream. We're in PA and I keep a tube of this by the kitchen sink, in my bedroom, the bathroom, and in my car. I use it all the time and it saves my hands. I discovered it by chance at a store one time and I've tried many products (used to work in Healthcare so was constantly hand-washing). I like O'Keefe's Working Hands all right, and Gold Bond healing hand cream used to be my favorite, but this replaces both. It's so helpful for my 5 year old, too, whose hands get super dry and cracked if we don't keep up with this. It's great stuff. Ever since I discovered it, I haven't been able to find it in stores again. It's always out of stock, so I guess others have figured it out as well!

Holy Grail Moisturizer for Rosacea
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-3.3 Fl Oz
In seeing so many negative reviews I felt compelled to weigh in as this is my favorite moisturizer. I have very dry, menopausal skin. Additionally, I have rosacea which seems to have been a nice gift from said menopause (you can only laugh, right?). It's very common for those of us in our 50's to have a compromised skin barrier and when an issue like rosacea is present, even more so. Because of all this my skin is very intolerant to most moisturizers and nearly all actives (over the last few years I've had to discontinue my retinols and chemical exfoliators). While ingredients like ALA's, petrolatum, mineral oil, parafin/bees wax, and lanolin are well tolerated and known to be quite soothing, they don't hydrate very well as they are more occlusive than moisturizing. Enter this product. Magically, it does both! It's marketed as a protective cream, which again implies occlusive, but it penetrates like no other. Gone is the tight, dry feeling that persisted even when I had a heavy layer of product on my skin (my previous moisturizer was Eucerin Original Healing Cream -- which still has its uses -- because it was the only thing I could put on my skin outside of squalane oil during a flare). Now, no topical can cure rosacea. However, the right product can calm the skin, repair the damaged lipid barrier, and improve its appearance. This moisturizer does just that and it's become my holy grail. Since starting this I've also added in the Cicalfate Serum which has only aided in repairing my skin. Another Avene product that works great for me is the XeraCalm Balm which helps with itching. I use all three of these daily and they've really helped fix the secondary issues that come with rosacea. As for the complaints about it being greasy or too heavy. I can see this not working for people with normal or oily skin (or perhaps only in moderation). But my skin loves the heavier weight and because one of the ways I soothe a flare is to keep a tiny mister bottle on hand and repeatedly spray my face so I have to guard against the drying effects of evaporation. These products are so lipid heavy that I can wet my face all day long without worrying about that, though I do reapply throughout the day. As for the watery consistency issue, I haven't had that problem but it does caution on the packaging not to expose the product to temperatures below 41 degrees F (5 C). I suspect that if it gets too cold either because of the weather or because of whatever warehouse it sat in during transit it will separate. Maybe open the package and before squeezing some out look to see if it has split and then shake it up/message the tube. So, if you have skin like mine don't hesitate to try this product. I'm leaving this absurdly long review for my struggling brothers and sisters out there with rosacea in hopes that it provides some relief! Happy moisturizing, internet strangers. ;)
