Written by a leading authority on Roman military history, this fascinating volume spans over a thousand years as it offers a memorable picture of one of the world's most noted fighting forces, paying special attention to the life of the common soldier.
Southern here illuminates the Roman army's history, culture, and organization, providing fascinating details on topics such as military music, holidays, strategy, the construction of Roman fortresses and forts, the most common battle formations, and the many tools of war, from spears, bows and arrows, swords, and slingshots, to the large catapulta (which fired giant arrows and bolts) and the ballista (which hurled huge stones). Perhaps most interesting are the details Southern provides about everyday life in the Roman army, everything from the soldiers pay (they were paid three times per year, but money was deducted for such items as food, clothing, weapons, the burial club, the pension scheme, and so on) to their often brutal life--if whole units turned and ran, about one-tenth of the men concerned were chosen by lot and clubbed to death and the rest were put on barley rations instead of wheat. Moreover, soldiers who lost weapons or their shields would fight savagely to get them back or would die in the process, rather than suffer the shame that attached to throwing weapons away or running from the battle.
Attractively illustrated, this book offers a fascinating look at the life of the Roman soldier, drawing on everything from Rome's rich historical and archaeological record to soldier's personal correspondence to depictions of military subjects in literature and art.

Perfect for my home office!
Size: 10 Ft, Color: Black
This 10 ft power strip has been a game changer for my home office. The cord is super long, which makes it easy to run along the wall or under furniture without any weird stretching. I really like the flat plug—it fits snugly behind my desk and doesn’t take up space like bulky ones do. The 7 outlets are spaced well so I can actually use all of them without the plugs getting in each other’s way. The 4 USB ports (especially the 2 USB-C ones) are super handy for charging my phone, tablet, and earbuds without needing extra adapters. Everything charges quickly, and it feels solid and well-made. I also like knowing it has surge protection built in, especially with how many electronics I have plugged in. Definitely recommend this if you want something that’s sleek, efficient, and built to handle a modern setup.

Great so far
Size: 6 FT, Color: White
The first thing I liked about this is that the on/off switch has a mark on the ON side, unlike my last Belkin power strip, which had a switch where you couldn't tell which side was on or off. That Belkin was remote, which I really wanted, but the Belkin remote never worked reliably even from the start, so I'm happy with a surge protector without a remote but where I don't have to guess whether it's on or off if I can't see the light on the device plugged into it. Very reliable and solid performance so far and I also especially like the generous amount of space between the outlets - enough for the biggest plug without getting crowded. Also it's not heavy & clunky like some. And the 6 foot cord length works great, too - a big difference with the usual 5 foot cord. Also has 2 USB slots which I can use to charge my iPhone and USB chargers. All this at a decent price and it's not clunky or ugly. Have been using it daily all day for 3 months now with zero problems.

Very Good Purchase
Size: 10 Ft, Color: White
I bought this for my fiancee at the time who had several things to plug in, but did not have the space and would keep rotating plugs. This was able to help her organise the place better and charge multiple things at once. She absolutely loves it. It even has ports for phone chargers, which is very useful. The quality is very good as well. Strong and durable and looks good once you take care of it. Can blend in well and it looks good aesthetically.
