Although known as the Father of Australian Ornithology, and revered for The Birds of Australia, Gould also played a key role in the documentation of Australia’s mammals. It was when Gould arrived in Australia to record birdlife that, finding himself “surrounded by objects as strange as if I had been transported to another planet”, he decided to embark upon a comprehensive survey of Australian mammals. This survey would ultimately result in The Mammals of Australia. Published in 13 parts across three volumes from 1845 to 1863, this epic work featured 182 illustrations – including those upon which this design celebrating the Red Kangaroo is based!
