Smith & Nephew OpSite Flexifix Transparent Film Roll

OpSite Flexifix is a waterproof transparent polyurethane film in a unique roll format — cut to the exact length needed for each application, making it highly adaptable to awkward body areas, large wound dressings, tubing, and device attachments that pre-cut film dressings cannot accommodate. The film is impermeable to water and bacteria while remaining highly permeable to moisture vapor, preventing the perspiration and fluid accumulation under the dressing that leads to maceration and skin breakdown.

Manufactured by Smith & Nephew — one of the world’s leading wound care companies — OpSite Flexifix uses an acrylic adhesive specifically selected to minimize the risk of skin damage on removal, even after extended wear periods. Available in 2” x 11-yard and 4” x 11-yard rolls. Latex-free. HCPCS code A6259.

Key Features

  • Unique roll format: Cut to the exact length required for each application — eliminates waste and adapts to any wound or device shape
  • Waterproof OPSITE film: Impermeable to water and external body fluids — patients can shower and bathe while wearing
  • Bacterial barrier: Physical barrier aids in the prevention of external bacterial contamination at the wound or device site
  • High moisture vapor permeability: Allows perspiration and moisture vapor to escape, helping prevent fluid accumulation and maceration under the film
  • Low-trauma acrylic adhesive: Minimizes the risk of skin damage on removal, particularly important after extended periods of wear
  • Low friction surface: Reduces shear forces on the skin surface beneath and around the film
  • Highly conformable and extensible: Adapts to body contours, curves, joints, and awkward anatomical locations
  • Latex-free: Safe for patients and clinicians with latex sensitivity
  • HCPCS A6259: Supports billing documentation for eligible home health and outpatient claims

What Is This Product?

OpSite Flexifix is constructed from a thin, transparent polyurethane film coated on one side with an acrylic adhesive. The polyurethane film is semipermeable — it is impermeable to liquid water, wound exudate, and bacteria, while allowing moisture vapor and oxygen to pass through. This moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) is a critical property: it permits the skin beneath to breathe and release perspiration vapor without allowing external contaminants in.

The roll format distinguishes Flexifix from standard pre-cut transparent film dressings. Rather than applying a fixed-size sheet, the clinician or caregiver cuts the precise length needed from the roll — allowing the film to be applied over large primary dressings, wrapped around tubing, cut to fit curved or irregular body surfaces, or layered in strips over wide wound sites. The green carrier grid backing system enables controlled, bubble-free application even on difficult anatomical locations.

Indications / Applications

OpSite Flexifix is indicated for:

  • Retention and fixation of primary wound dressings including non-adherent pads, foam dressings, and hydrogels
  • Secondary cover over primary dressings to provide waterproof protection
  • Fixation of IV tubing, catheters, and drainage tubes to the skin
  • Attachment and border sealing of leg bags, stoma devices, and continuous glucose monitoring sensors
  • Skin protection to reduce friction and shear forces on intact at-risk skin
  • Management of painful peripheral neuropathy (under clinical direction)
  • Wound dressing securement in high-moisture environments or for patients who shower with dressings in place

Note: OpSite Flexifix should not be applied directly over open wound beds. It is designed for use over intact skin, over a primary wound dressing, or for skin protection applications.

How It Works

OpSite Flexifix adheres to the skin or dressing surface via its acrylic adhesive and creates a continuous waterproof seal across the application area. The polyurethane film acts as a one-way barrier — liquid water and bacteria cannot penetrate inward, while moisture vapor generated by the skin can pass outward through the film. This selective permeability maintains a breathable, protected environment beneath the film without creating the maceration-promoting conditions that fully occlusive films cause.

The low-friction outer surface reduces the mechanical shear forces that act on skin during movement — a clinically relevant property for at-risk skin over bony prominences and in high-friction anatomical locations. The acrylic adhesive is formulated to maintain secure adhesion through water exposure while releasing from the skin with significantly less trauma than rubber-based adhesives, supporting safe use in patients requiring extended film wear.

Application Instructions

  1. Prepare the skin: Ensure the periwound or application skin is clean and completely dry — oil, lotion, and moisture reduce adhesion
  2. Cut to length: Cut the desired length of film from the roll; longer strips can be folded lengthwise to simplify application on narrow areas
  3. Crack the backing paper: Fold the strip along its length to crack the protective backing paper, making it easier to remove
  4. Remove backing paper “1”: Remove the smaller section of backing paper (marked “Remove First 1”) to expose the leading edge of adhesive
  5. Apply and smooth: Apply the exposed adhesive to the skin or dressing surface, then remove the second backing paper section and smooth the film flat, working out any air bubbles from the centre toward the edges
  6. Remove green carrier: Lift and pull away the green carrier grid using the pre-lifted central edge; repeat for the other half and smooth the film edges down firmly
  7. Monitor wear: Check at each dressing change for edge lifting, bubbling, or signs of periwound skin reaction

Dressing Change Guidance

OpSite Flexifix can remain in place for up to 7 days when the underlying wound or skin condition allows. Change when the film edges are lifting and no longer sealing, when the underlying primary dressing is saturated, or at the interval specified by the clinical protocol. To remove, lift one corner of the film and stretch it gently parallel to the skin surface rather than pulling upward — the stretch-to-remove technique significantly reduces adhesive trauma to the periwound skin. On fragile or sensitive skin, use a medical adhesive remover to soften the adhesive bond before peeling.

Why Choose This Product

  • Roll format versatility: One product that adapts to any dressing size, body shape, or device fixation need — eliminating the need to stock multiple pre-cut film sizes
  • Smith & Nephew OpSite technology: The OPSITE film system is one of the most clinically studied transparent film technologies in wound care, backed by decades of published clinical data
  • Waterproof with breathability: Patients can shower and remain active without dressing disruption while the high MVTR prevents maceration
  • Skin-friendly acrylic adhesive: Designed for extended wear and removal without the epidermal stripping associated with aggressive adhesives
  • Low friction surface: Additional benefit for patients with at-risk skin on pressure or friction points
  • Economical: Roll format provides 11 yards per roll — multiple applications per roll reduces per-use cost versus individual pre-cut film dressings

Perfect for a queen bed
Color: Tan, Size: 2' x 6' (Sheepskin Shape), Color: Tan, Size: 2' x 6' (Sheepskin Shape)
I LOVE this rug. I’m so glad I bought this instead of a cheap dupe. Reasonably priced, arrived quickly, doesn’t smell. It’s super soft and fluffy and really dense, so far I haven’t noticed any shedding. The size is perfect for draping across a queen bed. The color is beautiful and feels very natural. I might buy a second one for my bus conversion! Thank you so much!

Great quality, color is ok.
Color: Cream Brown, Size: 2 x 6 ft Sheepskin
The quality, texture, feel and smell of the rug is very good. The hairs adhere to the back lining well and don't shed even with my cat trying to bite it out. The only downside unfortunately is aesthetic— the cream brown I ordered, in natural light/sun shining on it, looks more yellowish - gold.

Great Quality!
Color: Ivory White, Size: 2' x 6' (Sheepskin Shape), Color: Ivory White, Size: 2' x 6' (Sheepskin Shape)
I have owned many sheepskins before and this one is by far the best deal. Cheaper than similar sizes, but not in a bad way! It’s a beautiful creamy white, super plush, and is very long. We keep it on the back of our couch and it gives a very cozy vibe. I haven’t had any issues with it shedding. Word of advice for cat owners: When we first got it, it did have a sheepskin smell but it isn’t a gross smell and it went away within a few days; however, my cat was very attracted to that smell and was “attacking” the sheepskin. We trained her not to do it just by spraying her with water—after a few times of that she stopped going anywhere near it. Now that the smell has dissipated, she isn’t attracted to it anymore but does like to sit on it every once and awhile (I can’t blame her, it’s sooooo soft). I saw someone else say their cat ruined their rug, so I wanted to give our story on how we prevented that and hopes it helps another cat owner. You just have to be alert for the first day, maybe even let it off-gas outside first, then keep a spray bottle nearby and the cat should stop messing with it!
