COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Materials Management & Manufacturing Planning course. This program will equip you with the skills and knowledge to understand what materials management is, how manufacturing environments operate, and how organisations integrate planning, production, and supply chain processes to deliver reliable, cost-effective outcomes. You will explore the operating environment in which manufacturing takes place, the characteristics customers expect in the products and services they buy, and how order qualifiers and order winners influence competitive advantage. This course also examines how manufacturing strategy, delivery lead times, and essential supply chain factors shape organisational performance in fast-moving markets.
This course begins by introducing supply chain concepts and common conflicts in traditional systems, helping you understand how operational priorities must be balanced across functions. You will explore the four main objectives a company must pursue to maximise profit, the several ways organisations provide the best customer service possible, how finance aims to keep investment and costs low, and how production must control its operating expenses. This section also defines the objectives of materials management and the importance of controlling work-in-process (WIP) to ensure smooth, predictable material flow.
You will then explore the primary activities involved in moving materials throughout a manufacturing system. This includes understanding the inputs to the manufacturing planning and control (MPC) system, the activities required to transport and manage goods, and the role of supply chain metrics in evaluating efficiency, cost, responsiveness, and reliability. This section also highlights the major production-control challenges organisations face and the necessary steps involved in implementing a performance measurement program that supports improvement.
A further component introduces the manufacturing planning and control system, including its five major levels and the functions performed within each stage. You will examine the strategic business plan, the production plan, and the concerns of production management as it balances capacity, demand, cost, and customer expectations. You will explore the master production schedule, the material requirements plan, and the essential roles of purchasing and production activity control. This section also covers capacity management, sales and operations planning, manufacturing resource planning, and enterprise resource planning, showing how these systems support coordinated decision-making.
Another learning area focuses on developing the production plan, starting with how to establish product groups and recognise the characteristics of production planning problems. You will explore the three basic strategies used when creating a production plan—level production, chase demand, and hybrid approaches—and how these strategies differ between make-to-stock and make-to-order environments. This section also explains the information needed to create an effective production plan and how forecasting, capacity data, inventory levels, and customer requirements influence planning decisions.
The course will also guide you through make-to-stock and make-to-order planning methods. You will explore how to develop a make-to-stock production plan, the information required for planning, and how this plan determines production quantities to meet projected demand. You will then examine how to develop a make-to-order production plan, the information needed to support customised production scheduling, and the general procedure for creating a level production plan in environments where goods are produced only after orders are received.
A further learning component focuses on resource planning, examining how organisations determine the capacity, labour, equipment, and materials needed to meet business objectives. You will explore how resource planning supports both make-to-stock and make-to-order production strategies, and how effective resource planning ensures the manufacturing system can respond to variations in demand, product mix, or operational constraints.
By the end of this course, you will be able to understand materials management principles, analyse manufacturing environments, interpret supply chain metrics, develop production plans, apply planning tools across different production strategies, and align manufacturing decisions with organisational goals for efficiency, customer service, and profitability.
