Reproduction of Skyline Crossing Yellow by Avery Tillmon

Avery Tillmon — "Skyline Crossing Yellow" is a compelling example of contemporary urban abstraction, a genre that emerged in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as artists sought to distill the complex visual language of the modern city into its essential forms. This piece aligns with the minimalist movement, emphasizing reduction and clarity, while simultaneously referencing the tradition of urban landscapes that dates back to the Impressionists and their fascination with light and atmosphere in metropolitan settings. The composition is defined by a striking asymmetry, with the Brooklyn Bridge's structure dominating the left and center, its bold yellow lines creating a powerful diagonal that draws the eye across the canvas. This diagonal not only establishes a strong visual rhythm but also serves as a metaphorical 'crossing,' suggesting movement, connection, and the dynamic flow of urban life. The use of a monochromatic palette for the cityscape, punctuated by a single, highly saturated yellow, is a masterful application of the principle of contrast. This technique, reminiscent of Pop Art's use of bold color to highlight consumer icons, transforms the architectural elements into graphic symbols rather than detailed representations. The high contrast and minimal line work create a sense of clarity and order, reflecting a modernist preoccupation with structure and design. The extensive use of negative space, particularly in the sky and water, is not merely an aesthetic choice but a compositional strategy that emphasizes the scale and form of the bridge and buildings, allowing the viewer to appreciate their silhouettes against a vast, open backdrop. This work is a significant contribution to the discourse on contemporary urban art, demonstrating how a powerful visual statement can be made through the deliberate simplification of complex subjects.

Just linear
Format: Paperback
I appreciate that it helps to organize the chaos of information, but I just used the template verbatim with my manager and it did not go very well. He said this linear approach does not work anymore with high-level corporate audiences. They want to cut right to the chase and start to dig into the deep details. This layout with simple images, even if you just pull away the map and anchor slides, makes the storytelling too much like a story, not giving enough credit to the speed at which certain audiences can and do process data on a slide. It was an interesting exercise and I still think this linear layout works in some cases. Just not if you are trying to communicate business case or other C-suite type of information.

Student Review
This book is an excellent introduction to the basic principles of insurance. We used this text as a supplement in our Intro to Act. Sci. class. It is very readable, easy to understand. Minimal mathematics required, some basic calculus concepts used, but only briefly. Don't let it's small size fool ya, it has plenty of information in there.

A #MustRead for cybersecurity practitioners
Format: Kindle
Rick Howard's latest book is the ultimate reference for cybersecurity practitioners, making it an essential read for anyone in the field. With his straightforward and refreshingly irreverent writing style, coupled with his profound technical knowledge, Rick has created a narrative that is easy to understand and grasp. He delves into the foundational aspect of cybersecurity, which he refers to as the cybersecurity first principle, which he then it to specific high-impact strategies. The book has eight well-written chapters providing a comprehensive overview of those strategies. Importantly, Rick then offers an up-to-date and thorough exploration of the complementary capabilities (tactical-level tools) that can be utilized to "reduce the probability of material impact due to a cyber event" - the cyber first principle. In the concluding chapter, Rick succinctly summarizes his contribution to the field, stating, "And that's it. Those are all the tools you need to design, build, and enhance a cybersecurity program based on first principle thinking." This assertion highlights the value of his book as a practical guide for designing and improving cybersecurity programs with a focus on first principles.
