Calcipotriol Description
Calcipotriol is often the initial treatment used for psoriasis.
It can help reduce symptoms such as redness and scaling in just 2 weeks.
Apply it directly to the affected area twice daily.

What is Calcipotriol?

Calcipotriol is often the first choice for treating psoriasis. It includes a vitamin D analogue that helps lessen scales and rough areas on your skin.

Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory condition that impacts about 60 million people globally. The most common symptom is dry, itchy patches on the skin. While there's no cure, treatment typically aims to manage your symptoms rather than eliminate them completely.

How does Calcipotriol work?

Calcipotriol is a man-made version of vitamin D, known as an analogue. Unlike vitamin D supplements that boost your vitamin D levels, calcipotriol works in a different way. It attaches to your vitamin D receptors to slow down the production of skin cells, especially keratinocytes, which are produced in excess in psoriasis. Keratinocytes cause scaly, dry skin, so by controlling their production, the thick scales are lessened.

It also helps manage your immune system to lessen swelling and inflammation, which are common symptoms of psoriasis.

What versions of Calcipotriol are there?

Calcipotriol is an effective ingredient for treating psoriasis and is included in various treatments and forms. It is most often found in topical ointments at a concentration of 0.005% (50 micrograms per gram). There's also a scalp solution available with the same concentration of calcipotriol, which is mainly used for scalp psoriasis because it's easy to apply to your head.

You can also find it combined with betamethasone dipropionate, a steroid. This combination is often the first treatment your doctors or clinicians suggest for psoriasis. Each ingredient targets different problems: calcipotriol helps reduce scaling, while the steroid works to decrease swelling, itching, and redness.

How long does Calcipotriol take to work?

Calcipotriol usually begins to take effect within a week or two. You should notice some improvement in your symptoms, particularly with scaling and flaking. However, it might take around four to eight weeks to experience the full benefits.

Is Calcipotriol similar to any other treatment?

Certainly! Calcipotriol is the generic form of Dovonex. They both have the same ingredients in the same concentration and work just as well as each other. The differences lie in the packaging, who makes them, and the cost. It's your choice which one to go for, but generally, the generic option tends to be less expensive.

How is Calcipotriol different from other treatments for psoriasis?

Calcipotriol is a vitamin D-based treatment used for psoriasis. It works by reducing the production of keratin, which leads to scaling and swelling. Another option for treating psoriasis is using steroids, such as betamethasone valerate. Steroids help to ease symptoms like swelling, redness, and itching.

If you have scalp psoriasis, your treatment will be a bit different. You may still use calcipotriol and steroids, but these will probably come as a shampoo or a scalp solution. You might also be advised to use Sebco and Capasal, which are salicylic acid and tar shampoos that help to reduce and remove scales and flakes from your scalp.

How well does Calcipotriol work for psoriasis?

A meta-analysis looking at over 62 trials assessed how well calcipotriol works for psoriasis. The findings showed that calcipotriol was more effective than a placebo in both adults and children.

When compared to topical corticosteroids, which are also regarded as first-choice treatments for psoriasis, both were found to be equally effective in improving the condition. However, after eight weeks, corticosteroids showed better improvements, although more people discontinued their use due to side effects.

The biggest improvements were seen when corticosteroid and calcipotriol treatments were used together.

Is Calcipotriol available prescription-free?

Calcipotriol is only available with a prescription to ensure it's safe and appropriate for you. If you're interested in getting Calcipotriol, you'll need to answer a few questions and select it from the recommended treatment options. Our clinicians will review your answers and approve the treatment if they believe it's suitable for you.

Important Information

Calcipotriol isn't right for everyone, and there are a few things you should know when using it.

The leaflet that comes with your medication provides detailed instructions on how to take it and information about possible side effects. If you find anything confusing, please let our clinician know, and they can discuss it with you.

Favorite toy so far!
Color: Purple, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I got the medium for my approx 25 lbs border collie mix 4.5 month old puppy. He is in love! He still has his razor baby teeth and didn't do any damage to it the first two uses. A great *quiet* toy to keep him busy. I am putting the replacement rings on autoship now!

1st out of 9 purchases to be broken in a few hours
Color: Purple, Size: Medium (Pack of 1), Color: Purple, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I have bought 9 of the PetSafe ring toys. 5 for my pup and 4 as gifts. I have all of the toys (chicken, steak, jack, corn, ball, bone, nobbly). Never have I ever experienced any of them being broken in 1 afternoon. I will be asking for a replacement. But on the positive note, he was exhausted after finally getting the rings off. He has never broken any of the previous toys.

Best toy I've found in a long time!
Color: Purple, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I got the small Nobbly for my 3lb puppy, but it's too big for her (she loves the xs bouncy ball one anyway). So my 15yo standard poodle adopted it and loves it. It's really too small for him so I watch him and don't leave him unattended. He is so old with bad teeth, and the softness of the center is great for him. It is totally cleaning his teeth, I see white where I haven't for years. But ZERO bleeding which is awesome. It's easy for him to hold and difficult for him to get to the rings, they last plenty long. I will order this one for him in a larger size, probably the medium. 100% satisfied with these toys! Ps I also have a hard chewing 12yo aussie that breaks teeth on anything like a bone. He gets thru the rings in minutes with the bouncy ball and nobbly, but takes way longer with the jack shaped one. He also likes to chew the purple ends of the jack, not just the rings. But I don't think they're hard enough to break his teeth. All of my dogs are different style chewers, but there is a good variety of designs so you can find the perfect one for your canine friend!

Dog-approved toy!
This dog toy was initially confusing because the instructions did not say or show where to find the power button and charging port. They were nowhere to be found until I realized I could unscrew the bottom part of the ball from the top (see picture). That revealed the button and port -- problem solved. Then on to the dog test. Our dog was initially confused by and ultimately fascinated with the ball as seen in the video. There are several operating modes depending on how active your dog is/wants to be. The toy seems quite rugged, so immune to rough dogplay, at least from a golden retriever. Our dog considers this a hit!
