COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Leadership & Management in Organisations course. This program will equip you with a clear understanding of the relationship between leadership and management, the diverse roles modern managers fulfil, and the interpersonal, behavioural, and reflective skills required to lead effectively in contemporary organisations. You will explore leadership models, behavioural styles, emotional intelligence, influencing strategies, and self-awareness practices that enable leaders to motivate teams, drive performance, and adapt to changing organisational needs.
This course begins by examining the relationship between management and leadership, highlighting how both disciplines overlap, complement one another, and jointly shape organisational success. You will explore the eight roles of the managerial leader and why managers must balance competing demands such as results vs relationships, structure vs flexibility, and short-term needs vs long-term strategy. This section also explains how to apply leadership and management frameworks at different management levels, from frontline supervision to executive leadership. You will examine the role of the managerial leader, what distinguishes effective leadership behaviour, and how individuals can develop as leaders through intentional practice.
The next learning area focuses on self-awareness and reflective capacity. You will explore what self-awareness is, the power of reflection, and how leaders learn through reflective habits that promote insight, emotional clarity, and behavioural improvement. This section introduces major models of leadership, how to be a leader in practice, and how to identify the right leadership style for different situations. You will explore how to evaluate the relationship between leadership and management in contemporary organisations, and how to identify your own roles, strengths, and preferences as a modern manager. This section also explains why developing leadership capacity is mission critical for organisations facing rapid change, talent shortages, and increasing complexity.
A further part of the program examines power, influence, and emotional intelligence. You will explore how to build your power base ethically, the concept of emotionally intelligent leadership, and Goleman’s model of emotional intelligence, which includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. You will also examine behavioural styles, including the DISC behavioural style framework, which categorises tendencies into dominance, influence, steadiness, and compliance. This section explores each personality type—its strengths, communication style, and potential blind spots—and how understanding these tendencies helps leaders adapt their approach and improve interactions across diverse teams.
The final learning area focuses on beliefs, behaviours, influencing skills, and leadership adaptability. You will explore how beliefs, assumptions, and behavioural patterns shape your leadership effectiveness, and how to build personal power while broadening your range of influencing tactics. This section explains how to assess your emotional intelligence and understand its importance for building effective relationships. You will learn how to adjust your leadership style to improve communication, collaboration, and trust with different people, and how unexamined beliefs can become barriers to influence—along with strategies for managing and reframing these beliefs.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand the connection between leadership and management, recognise the roles and demands of the managerial leader, strengthen your self-awareness, apply adaptive leadership styles, use emotional intelligence effectively, communicate with diverse behavioural types, and influence others with confidence, clarity, and ethical intent.
