HD Carbon Steel (auch als High-Carbon Steel oder Kohlenstoffstahl bezeichnet) ist deutlich stärker und härter als Edelstahl (rostfreier Stahl), weil es mehr Kohlenstoff enthält.

Für den Einsatz im Garten ist wichtig, dass Produkte aus Kohlenstoffstahl anders auf Feuchtigkeit reagieren als Produkte aus Edelstahl. Edelstahl kann durch den Zusatz von Chrom sehr gut mit Feuchtigkeit umgehen und ist 100% rostfrei. Kohlenstoffstahl enthält keinen Chromzusatz, wird aber dennoch nicht schnell rosten. Das liegt an einer Schutzschicht, die als Reaktion mit Feuchtigkeit entsteht (Patina), ähnlich der Schicht, die man manchmal auf Kupfer sieht. Kohlenstoffstahl ist also nicht rostfrei, aber rostbeständig.
